4-H Summer Day Camp

Name

Sharon Grice

Situation

One of the major problems in Marion County is a lack of recreational activities for our youth. Several community groups along with law enforcement planned and implemented activities and events for the summer months.

Response

4-H played their part of providing activities for Marion County youth by organizing 4-H day camps and summer community clubs throughout the county. These clubs were held in churches, county offices and recreation centers. Senior 4-H'ers attended a two-day volunteer training and were able to teach programs designed for the day camps. During the summer, 527 youth were reached. All of the programs offered were hands-on and covered topics such as: Nutrition: Eggonomics, quick breads, dairy, and nutritious snacks; Science/Tech: lamp building; Heritage Arts: sand painting, clay flower pot designs (flowers were planted in the pots and given to patients in a local nursing home); Gardening: small container garden, creating terrariums.

Impact

98% of the 527 youth indicated that they gained a new skill. Participating in a 4-H program was a new experience for 287 of the youth. Since that time, 23 of the new participants have joined 4-H through either the Horse or Nutrition Clubs. Teen leaders where were used to provide leadership for the majority of the day camps. This experience improved the teen's communication skills and gave them the opportunity to give back to 4-H.
