Clemson Model U.N. team recognized at international security conference

CLEMSON — Clemson University’s Model United Nations team was honored as the outstanding delegation at the Duke International Security Conference at Duke University.

The Oct. 16-18 conference simulated international relations negotiations among China, the European Union, Russia and the United States during global energy and terrorism crises. Students acted as representatives from the four participants in both a plenary session involving all delegates as well as in individual committees.

Clemson’s eight delegates were recognized as the most outstanding delegation in both the plenary and the committees. Delegates included:  

• Ellen Andrews, a junior political science major from Clemson;
• Danielle Elhage, a senior political science major from Duncan;
• Paul Farmer, a junior biochemistry major from Anderson;
• Chris Godbey, a senior political science major from Simpsonville;
• Matthew Londergan, a junior political science major from Summerville;
• Toni Rice, a senior political science major from Clemson;
• Paul Sabisch, a sophomore political science major from Rock Hill; and
• Lisa Spadaccini, a junior economics major from Oradell, N.J.

In addition to the award for outstanding delegation, Clemson students also won awards for their contributions to the four committees. Ellen Andrews was awarded the outstanding delegate award; Chris Godbey and Paul Farmer were awarded the best delegate awards; and Matthew Londergan and Paul Sabisch received honorable mentions.

Clemson, Duke University, North Carolina Central University, the University of Alabama and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sent teams to the conference. All universities had delegates represent each of the four nations.

Clemson’s Model United Nations team is both a student club and a one-hour course in the political science department. Students from any college or major at Clemson can participate to prepare for national and international competitions.
