CLEMSON — The Society of Manufacturing Engineers has elected Clemson University professor of mechanical engineering John Ziegert to its prestigious College of Fellows for 2009, along with eight other academic and industry leaders.
The new fellows were inducted at the the society’s fall meeting in Dearborn, Mich. The College of Fellows recognizes engineers, researchers and business leaders whose outstanding leadership, innovation and research have made exceptional contributions to manufacturing and industry.
Ziegert is the Clemson Timken Chair of Automotive Design and Development. He conducts research in precision manufacturing and metrology and lightweight design and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical and automotive engineering.
Prior to coming to Clemson in 2006, he was the Ebaugh Chair of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida. Ziegert co-founded Tetra Precision Inc., a metrology instrumentation supplier based in Florida. In addition to acting as editor-in-chief of the journal Precision Engineering, he holds four patents and has authored more than 100 technical papers.
Ziegert received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and his master’s in theoretical and applied mechanics from Northwestern University. He received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 1989.
