CLEMSON — Anand K. Gramopadhye, professor and chairman of industrial engineering at Clemson University, has been elected a Fellow with the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the highest recognition conferred by the professional society.

The honor recognizes Gramopadhye's career in industrial-engineering research, which focuses on solving design problems in human-machine systems and modeling human performance in technologically complex systems, such as health care, aviation and manufacturing.

Gramopadhye's research has drawn more than $12 million in funding from private industry and agencies including the  National Institutes of Health, NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Energy that has helped support the education of more than 100 graduate and undergraduate students. He has chaired master's theses and dissertations for more than 60 graduate students and his research has led to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications that include journals, proceedings articles and chapters in textbooks.

Gramopadhye's current research is focused on three areas: visualization and virtual reality to support training and job-aiding; support of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education; and addressing information technology and process-design issues in health care, aviation and manufacturing.

As chairman of the department, he has overseen program initiatives that resulted in significant growth in Clemson's industrial engineering program. He twice has been recognized by the National Academy of Engineering through the Frontiers in Engineering Program and serves as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics and on the editorial boards of several other academic journals.

The Institute of Industrial Engineers oversees professional accreditation in the field, publishes academic and professional journals, and sponsors a variety of awards and honors, of which election as a Fellow is the highest. The international association was founded in 1948 to provide leadership for the application, education, training, research and development of industrial engineering.
