Published: July 26, 2010

CLEMSON — The 2010 Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championship will be hosted by the SC 4-H Horse Program and Clemson University’s Cooperative Extension Service at the T. Ed Garrison Arena Tuesday, July 27, through Aug. 1. Admission is free for spectators.

Along with such events as racing, roping, jumping and the dignified disciplines of dressage and equitation, the championship competition includes six educational contests involving hippology, the study of horses.

Held on the Clemson University main campus July 28 and July 29, the hippology events are multiphase knowledge contests, including written and identification exams, horse judging and team problems; the Horse Bowl, an “all things equine” quiz bowl; horse judging in which contestants are ranked in their placing of horses based on industry standards and oral reasons skills; and individual and team presentations, which are demonstrations or illustrated talks on an equine topic.

Then Friday afternoon the boot-and-saddles showdowns begin at Garrison arena. South Carolina riders will compete against 4-Hers from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

A full show schedule can be downloaded at http://www.clemson.edu/extension/4h/kids_families/projects/agriculture_and_animals/show_schedule.pdf.

“We expect that 2,500 people will be arriving July 27 and staying in area hotels, enjoying our local restaurants and Southern hospitality,” said Kristine Vernon, event director and Clemson assistant professor in the animal and veterinary sciences department.
