CLEMSON — Anita Chen, a Clemson University management major from Abbeville, will spend the upcoming school year studying in China after receiving the Confucius Scholarship from China’s Ministry of Education.
The scholarship will cover Chen’s tuition, lodging and living allowances while she is in China.
“By studying in China, the students will learn more than the language,” said Xiaobo Hu, director of the Clemson University Center for China Studies. “They will learn about the rich culture and history, understand the rapid development and build important networks that will have long-lasting benefits.”
In September, Chen will enroll in the year-long Chinese Language Program at Guizhou University in China’s southern city of Guiyang.
“I plan to attend graduate school for food and policy studies, and fluency in a critical language would be helpful for any area of focus,” Chen said.
Chen is a graduate of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics and came to Clemson University as a Palmetto Scholarship recipient. Since coming to Clemson she has taken Chinese and Spanish languages and spent a semester in Bilbao, Spain.
Formed in 2007, the Center for China Studies promotes a better understanding of the U.S.-China relationship, China’s economic development and its impact on the world. The center sponsors and organizes a variety of programs, including a speaker series that brings various experts on China to the Upstate and campus. The center also assists in arranging scholarships and study-abroad programs to provide students with opportunities to study at top Chinese universities.
