FLORENCE — Clemson University’s Pee Dee Research and Education Center will open its fields from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, for the annual Pee Dee Farm Field Day agricultural showcase.
The event, which is free and open to the public, features a choice of morning tours and includes lunch.
The tours include: Clemson’s long leaf pine restoration program, switchgrass use as a biofuel, muscadine grapes, soybean and cotton breeding, cotton insect management, peanut varieties and tobacco insect control, among other presentations.
Lunch will feature comments by S.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers; David Winkles, president of the S.C. Farm Bureau; and a Clemson University update by George Askew, associate dean and associate director of agriculture and natural resources and chief operating officer of the Clemson Experiment Station. Charlotte Krugler, emergency preparedness veterinarian with Clemson University Livestock-Poultry Health, also will give a presentation.
After lunch, from 1 to 2 p.m., Certified Crop Advisor training — soil nutrient management — will be offered by U.S. Department of Agriculture soil scientist Ariel Szogi.
Clemson’s Pee Dee center is at 2200 Pocket Road, Florence, just a few miles from Interstate 95.
