Enjoy a day of agriculture at annual Edisto Fall Field Day

BLACKVILLE — From row crops and beef cattle to peanuts and pumpkins, the Clemson University Edisto Research and Education Center will open its fields Thursday, Sept. 2, for the annual agricultural showcase.

The event, which is free and open to the public, includes lunch and offers a choice among three morning tours:

  • 9 a.m.-noon: Peanut tour, which includes presentations on the performance of newly released varieties, nutrient supplements and rescue treatments for late leaf spot
  • 9 a.m.-noon: Agronomic crops, which includes presentations on choosing optimum planting dates and seeding rates for soybean, weed management in cotton and soybean, and management of insects in corn
  • 9:30 a.m.-noon: Beef cattle and forages, which includes identifying and manipulating forage quality, identification and control of problem pasture and hayfield weeds and an update on perennial peanut as a potential forage crop
  • 9:30 a.m.-noon: Fall vegetables, including major viruses that attack pumpkins, control of pumpkin insects, and pumpkin diseases.

During lunch from noon to 1:15 p.m., the indoor program includes addresses from John Kelly, Clemson University vice president for public service and agriculture, S.C. Department of Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers and David Winkles, president of the S.C. Farm Bureau.

Following lunch, an afternoon tour between 1:30 and 2:50 p.m. will take in the Edisto Forage Bull Test Center.

Clemson’s Edisto center is on U.S. 78 three miles west of Blackville in Barnwell County.
