FLORENCE — Help keep local beaches and waterways clean of trash, debris and pollution during the 2010 Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep hosted by the Florence Darlington Stormwater Consortium.

Volunteers can help with the cleanup at two sites:

  • Black Creek at Kalmia Gardens, 1624 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville — 8 a.m. Sept. 11. Contact clean-up coordinator Dan Hill at 843-383-8145.
  • Jeffries Creek Park, 1501 Hillside Drive, Florence — 9 a.m. Sept. 18. Contact Terasa Young at 843-661-4800, ext. 113.

With the help of local cleanup coordinators called site captains, local volunteers will join thousands of people around the state in one of the largest one-day cleanup of litter at beaches and waterways.

The statewide event is organized by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources. Beach Sweep/River Sweep is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.

The Florence Darlington Stormwater Consortium is a regional collaboration involving the Carolina Clear program in partnership with communities and educators from universities, state agencies and nonprofits.
