SUMTER — Help Sumter Stormwater Solutions keep local beaches and waterways clean of trash and pollution during the 2010 Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep from 10 a.m.–noon Sept. 18 at Shot Pouch Creek along the walking trail near the YMCA.

Volunteers should meet at the NAPA store parking lot at 530 Broad St.

With the help of local cleanup coordinators called site captains, local volunteers will join thousands of people around the state in one of the largest one-day litter cleanups.

Last year, volunteers removed more than 36,000 pounds of litter and aquatic debris from South Carolina rivers, swamps, beaches, lakes, marshes and creeks.

The statewide event is organized by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources. Beach Sweep/River Sweep is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.

Sumter Stormwater Solutions is a regional collaboration involving the Carolina Clear program in partnership with communities and educators from universities, state agencies and nonprofits.
