CLEMSON — Clemson University employees Kathy Hobgood and Tony Cawthon were recognized for their contributions to the student housing profession by the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International at the association’s recent annual conference and exposition.
Hobgood, director of residential life for university housing, was recognized for co-authoring “Growing Season,” an article published in the March-April edition of Talking Stick, the association's official magazine. Hobgood received the Robert P. Cook Talking Stick Article of the Year Award, which is presented to a work that stands out as the most thought-provoking, creative, well-written and useful article of the year. Hobgood’s article focuses on the relationship between mentors and their protégés.
Cawthon, department chairman of leadership, counselor education, human and organizational development, received the Research and Publication Award, which is given annually to a member of the housing profession who has contributed significantly to housing-related research and publications.
Before coming to Clemson in 2006, Hobgood held positions at both the University of Florida and Albion College. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and received her master’s at Western Illinois University. Hobgood has held several different positions in the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International, including chairing the Talking Stick Committee and as a member of the Talking Stick Advisory Board. She has been a host committee member, state representative and executive board secretary of the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers. She currently is the organization's historian and archivist.
Cawthon has been active in the housing community for many years. Before joining Clemson’s Eugene T. Moore School of Education, he worked in student affairs at Clemson, the University of Tennessee Knoxville and Mississippi State University. Cawthon is the executive board director of knowledge advancement for the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International. He also is on the editorial board for The Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice.
