CLEMSON — Drafted in 1860, South Carolina’s Ordinance of Secession will be on display around the state this year to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The secession papers will be at Clemson University Nov. 9.
The documents will be at the Strom Thurmond Institute from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eric Emerson, director of South Carolina Archives and History, will deliver a public lecture on the significance of the documents at 5:30 p.m. in the Self Auditorium.
Abel Bartley, associate professor of history, is using this opportunity to launch a five-year discussion series about the causes and implications of the Civil War.
“I think it is important to have an open conversation about the Civil War and its contemporary implications from what led up to the war to its causes,” said Bartley. “What we really want to do is let people see the document and then talk about the war in stages over a five-year period in order to fully understand the history.”
