Women’s Alumni Council scholarship fund to honor Anna Calhoun Clemson

Published: December 15, 2010

CLEMSON — The Clemson Women’s Alumni Council is renaming its scholarship fund to honor Anna Maria Calhoun Clemson, the daughter of John C. Calhoun and wife of Thomas Green Clemson, who played a pivotal role in founding Clemson University.

The fund, previously named the Women’s Alumni Council Unrestricted Scholarship Endowment, will now be named the Anna Maria Calhoun Clemson Scholarship Endowment Fund. More than $80,000 has been given to the fund and council members hope to reach $125,000 for the endowment.

“This is a great way to honor the memory of one of the most important figures in Clemson University history,” said Elizabeth Milhous, director of engagement for Clemson’s alumni center and a past president of the Women’s Alumni Council. “Anna Calhoun Clemson shared her husband’s vision of creating a ‘high seminary of learning’ to benefit South Carolina, so it is very fitting that a scholarship in her name will benefit today’s students.”

Donations to the endowment can be made online at http://www.clemson.edu/giving or by sending a check to:

Clemson University Foundation
Attn: Anna Maria Calhoun Clemson Scholarship Endowment Fund
