CLEMSON — Clemson University's alumni participation is third highest among public research universities in the nation, according to U.S.News & World Report. The rankings are based on the percentage of alumni who donate to their alma maters.

Nearly 28 percent of Clemson alumni give to the university, tying Clemson with Georgia Tech in the third spot and up one from last year. Clemson’s alumni participation rate is more than double the national average of 12.4 percent.

Alumni gave more than $6 million to the Clemson University Foundation this past fiscal year. That does not include money given to support IPTAY, which also counts toward the participation rate.

“Even in a down economy, alumni support of Clemson remained strong and steady. That speaks volumes about the loyalty of our alumni and their passion to make Clemson a better university,” said Brian O’Rourke, director of development and alumni affairs. “During The Will to Lead campaign, all gifts make a difference, and we are grateful that the Clemson family is investing in our students and our university.”

Other schools ranked in the top 10 include the University of Alabama, Auburn University, the University of Nebraska, the University of Virginia, Penn State University and the University of North Carolina.
