FLORENCE — Learn how to create beautiful and functional landscapes that protect natural resources during the 2011 Pee Dee Backyard Landscape Series hosted by Clemson University and the Florence/Darlington Stormwater Consortium.
The series will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. the first Thursday of each month March 3 through Sept. 1 at the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation Library.
All classes are free and open to the public.
The series consists of seven hour-long presentations on a variety of gardening-related topics that incorporate the principles of environmental landscape management.
Each presentation will focus on topics incorporating the principles of environmental landscape management. Attend one session, a few sessions or the entire series.
The program is divided into two parts: instruction and service.

Learn the basics of raised-bed gardening in the Pee Dee, including the square foot principle, organic gardening and sustainable gardening practices.

June 2 — Maintaining Southern Lawns
Learn best management practices to grow healthy turfgrass and protect natural resources.

July 7 — Drought Tolerant Plants
Save water and find out which plants thrive during drought conditions.
Presenter: Jenny Lee, certified arborist, city of Florence
Aug. 4 — Managing Yard Pests
Learn how to recognize the “good bugs” and practice integrated pest management.
Presenter: Juang Horng Chong, assistant professor, Clemson University
Sept. 1 — Gardening for Wildlife
Attract wildlife to your yard by providing food, water and shelter.
