Charlotte resident at Clemson earns fellowship from National Science Foundation

CLEMSON, S.C. — Kristina Kesel of Charlotte has received a graduate research fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Kesel is a Clemson University senior majoring in biochemistry.

Fellows receive three years of support for their graduate studies, which includes an annual stipend of $30,000, a $10,500 allowance for tuition and fees and opportunities for international research and professional development. The fellowship program recognizes outstanding students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.

The NSF graduate research fellowship program is highly competitive. According to Bruce Rafert, dean of the Graduate School at Clemson, the program received 12,000 applications and granted just 2,000 awards last year.
