CLEMSON — Caitlin Davis of Greenwood, a member of the Clemson University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta academic honors society, has been awarded the May Brunson Fellowship of $3,000 for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The award is intended to offset the expense of pursuing a graduate or professional degree. Alpha Lambda Delta offers 23 fellowships to its members each year. Members may apply for the awards during their senior years or after they have earned their baccalaureate degrees if they have maintained Alpha Lambda Delta initiation standards throughout their college careers.

The award honors the memory of May Brunson, an Alpha Lambda Delta council member for 18 years and national president from 1966 until her death in 1970. Brunson held many positions in the organization and devoted years of service to Alpha Lambda Delta.

Most applicants for the 2011 competition were seniors from the society’s 270 chapters nationwide. The applications were reviewed and decided upon by a group of volunteers that comprised the national Fellowship Reader’s Committee.

Davis is a senior secondary education major with a focus in history and has been involved with Alpha Lambda Delta throughout her college career. She will next pursue a master’s in literacy education.

Alpha Lambda Delta is an honor society for students who have maintained 3.5 or higher grade-point averages and are in the top 20 percent of their classes during their first year or term.
