CLEMSON — The numbers are in, and it looks like Clemson University has set a new world record for the number of people participating in a Zumba fitness class. In the April 21 record-breaking attempt, 1,294 people participated in a Zumba class at Littlejohn Coliseum.
The previous record was held by the University of South Carolina, which partnered with Palmetto Health to host a Zumba class of 1,135 people.
“I believe Clemson students were so excited to come out to this event because it was something fun and unique to take part in. This event definitely promoted both school and community spirit and brought people of all ages together to take on the Gamecocks and have fun on a Thursday night,” said Riley Csernica, co-founder and vice president of Acts of Campus Kindness, one of the organizations sponsoring the event.
According to Csernica, people came from as far away as Anderson, Greenville and even Charleston to participate in the event.
The event is being submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for verification. Other sponsors for the event were Healthy Campus, the Division of Student Affairs, campus recreation, the Clemson University Marketing Association, CLEMSONLiVE and TigerTown Graphics.
