CLEMSON — Clemson professor of education Linda Gambrell was named co-editor of “Reading Research Quarterly,” one of the most prestigious research journals in the field of literacy.

This most recent honor further enhances Gambrell’s long list of distinctions in the field of reading and literacy. She has been president of the International Reading Association, a nonprofit organization committed to worldwide literacy. She began her involvement with the International Reading Association as an undergraduate at the University of Maryland and since 1999 has been actively involved with the South Carolina chapter. In 2004, Gambrell was elected to the Reading Hall of Fame, which honors outstanding contributors to reading instruction.

Gambrell was named co-editor of “Reading Research Quarterly” along with Susan Neuman of the University of Michigan.

“Dr. Gambrell recently received the William S. Gray Citation of Merit during the 2011 convention of the International Reading Association," said Kathy Headley, associate dean for research and graduate studies in Clemson University’s College of Health, Education and Human Development. "This award is given for outstanding contributions to the field of reading. Such recognition of Dr. Gambrell’s research and literacy contributions solidify her appointment as co-editor of ‘Reading Research Quarterly.' As an internationally recognized authority on literacy, Dr. Gambrell is adept at translating research into best practices for education.”

Her courses at Clemson include doctoral seminars on the psychology of teaching reading and children’s literature and an undergraduate course on the methods of teaching reading in elementary school. Gambrell’s research interests include reading comprehension instruction, literacy motivation and the role of discussion in teaching and learning.

“Reading Research Quarterly” has been in print for more than 40 years and is one of the top education research journals in the country.
