Clemson University's Eugene T. Moore School of Education hosting Advanced Placement Summer Institute

CLEMSON — Clemson University’s Eugene T. Moore School of Education is hosting an Advanced Placement Summer Institute for teachers.

The Advanced Placement Summer Institute, offered in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Education, provides two weeks of professional development training for participants to teach advanced placement courses.

The School of Education received a $250,000 grant from the state Department of Education to provide this training. The grant covers the costs of graduate classes for teachers and instructional materials. All the courses provide three-hour graduate-level credits to prepare teachers to strengthen their understanding of the advanced placement program, the pedagogy and assessment process, as well as to enhance content mastery.

Two-hundred teachers are attending the institute this year. In the last four years, Clemson has provided advanced placement training for more than 700 teachers in South Carolina.

“We are extremely proud of the service we are able to provide the teachers of South Carolina. Our efforts have helped prepare teachers to teach the best and brightest young people in our state,” said Julie Mcgaha, coordinator of the program.

Fourteen faculty and all five colleges in the university participate in the institute, which runs through July 22.

Advanced placement programs provide rigorous courses of study for high school students across multiple disciplines followed by exams in the spring. Students who pass the exam may be able to earn college credits in corresponding courses.
