SUMTER — Help Sumter Stormwater Solutions and Clemson University Extension keep local beaches and waterways clean of trash, debris and pollution during the 2011 Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep.
Volunteers can join the cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 17 behind Sumter Mall. Volunteers should meet in the Belk parking lot. Registration is not required.
For more information, contact Mary Nevins, 803-865-1216, ext. 122, or mnevins@clemson.edu.
With the help of cleanup coordinators called site captains, local volunteers will join thousands of people around the state in one of the largest one-day litter cleanup of beaches and waterways.
Volunteers will clear trash from the stormwater channel running behind Sumter Mall along Bultman Drive. The man-made channel collects water from the mall’s parking lot and feeds into Shot Pouch Creek and Swan Lake.
Trash bags and water will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. A waiver is required for all volunteers. A parent or guardian must sign a waiver for all volunteers under the age of 18. Unaccompanied youth must be 14 years old or older. An adult must supervise any youth group of three people or more.
The statewide event is organized by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources.
