CLEMSON — Laura Wiles of Wendell, N.C., a senior bioengineering major at Clemson University, was one of only 16 undergraduates in the nation to attend the National Institutes of Health Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP).

The 10-week program is an opportunity for rising biomedical engineering seniors to participate in groundbreaking research projects under the guidance of world-class scientists. Students can choose from a wide range of research topics.

Wiles worked with a team on a new X-ray imaging technique that would be able to look at soft tissue.

Interns spent time in and outside of the lab, taking tours of museums, monuments and labs. Students were mentored by professionals and were encouraged to attend many of the lectures by scientists at the forefront of their respected fields.

“Participating in BESIP was an awesome opportunity," Wiles said. "I'm thankful I got to have the experience and to get to know all of the people I met this summer. Much of the knowledge I gained there will remain with me and also be useful as I finish my degree here at Clemson, as I pursue a graduate degree, and even beyond that."
