Leadership South Carolina to honor three alumni

COLUMBIA — Leadership South Carolina will recognize the legacy of three Palmetto State leaders at the program’s 2011 Alumni Awards luncheon Friday.

The Dick and Tunky Riley Legacy of Leadership Awards brings business, community and government leaders together from across the state to honor three South Carolinians whose accomplishments embody the spirit of leadership.

The awards will recognize:

• J. Mac Holladay, chief executive officer of Market Street Services and past Leadership South Carolina chairman;
• Dr. Suzan Boyd, children’s health advocate and EdVenture Board member; and
• Ed Sellers, former chairman and chief executive officer of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

The luncheon is at 11:45 a.m. at the Capital City Club, 1201 Main St., 25th floor.

Leadership South Carolina Executive Director Helen Munnerlyn said, “We are thrilled to recognize these wonderful people for their dedicated service and willingness to support Leadership S.C. through many years. The awards luncheon embraces common values and goals in honoring South Carolina’s leaders."

The awards luncheon, in its second year, honors community activists who embody the organization's primary goals of selfless public service and making significant contributions to improving the quality of life for South Carolinians.

Other recipients include Jim “Soni” Sonefeld, Craig Garner and former U.S. Secretary of Education Dick Riley.

Leadership South Carolina is supported by the Clemson University’s Institute for Economic and Community Development at the Sandhill Research and Education Center. 

The program was established in 1979 to provide gifted and highly motivated South Carolinians an opportunity to advance their leadership skills while broadening their understanding of issues facing the state. Each year, individuals are selected for the nine-month program through a competitive process. Selection is based on an applicant’s demonstrated abilities as a leader and on their past records of service in a leadership capacity.

The 51-member Class of 2012 comes from the public and private sectors and nonprofits across the state. The program includes statewide experts in a variety of fields who explore quality of life, economic development, education and social issues.
