SUMTER — The city of Sumter and Sumter Stormwater Solutions are offering a free stormwater basics workshop on establishing grass at new construction sites to prevent stormwater pollution.
The professional workshop is intended for contractors, builders, project managers, engineers, site inspectors, developers and public works personnel.
The workshop is from 11:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 17 at Swan Lake Park, 822 W. Liberty St., Sumter. The class is free, but registration is required by Jan. 10.

Participants will learn how to establish vegetative cover on construction sites, including ground preparation, methods and equipment, seed selection, nutrient needs, mulching, overcoming pH issues and perennial and annual ground covers.
A field demonstration will include ground preparation, planting and mulching methods that should be incorporated at a site.
Participants may register for either or both of the sessions.
The workshop is sponsored by the city of Sumter, Sumter County, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Sumter Stormwater Solutions and Clemson Extension.
Sumter Stormwater Solutions is a regional collaboration involving the Carolina Clear program in partnership with communities and educators from universities, state agencies and nonprofits.

Carolina Clear is a stormwater education and awareness program of the Clemson University Restoration Institute and the Center for Watershed Excellence. The program’s goal is to minimize polluted stormwater runoff by educating the general public, youth, builders, developers, homeowners and government officials about how they can keep water in the state’s streams, rivers and basins as clean as possible.
