CLEMSON — Mechanical engineering professor Richard Figliola has been recognized by his peers and the Class of 1939 as one of Clemson University’s best.
Figliola was named the 2011 recipient of the Class of 1939 Award for Excellence. The award was established to inspire the greatest level of achievement by Clemson faculty members. It is given annually to one distinguished faculty member whose contributions for a five-year period have been judged by his or her peers to demonstrate outstanding service to the university, the student body and the greater community. In addition to receiving a stipend, recipients of the award become honorary members of Clemson’s class of 1939.
Figliola received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. He joined the mechanical engineering department in 1980 and spent seven years as department chairman.
His research interests include fluid mechanics and energy transport in a broad range of engineered devices. He is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and serves on both ASME and NATO committees that define test uncertainty qualification methods. He has held positions at Pratt and Whitney as a jet engine test engineer and was a NATO Fellow at the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
