CLEMSON — The Clemson University Tiger Band can “shake the Southland,” but the group of dedicated student musicians and faculty has been shaking the video screen too in the Vic Firth Spotlight and at the College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference.

Vic Firth, a leading percussion stick and mallet manufacturing company, chose the Clemson University Tiger Band Drumline as its featured group for the Vic Firth Spotlight. The site includes photos, biographies of the band and the staff and a 14-minute video that showcases the Tiger Band and Clemson University.

“It is truly an honor to be featured by Vic Firth and placed in the spotlight of the No. 1 drumstick company in the world,” said Paul Buyer, director of percussion and professor of music at Clemson. “I’m very proud of our 2011 Clemson Drumline and Tiger Band members and staff for their excellent work represented in this video and the feature page.”

The Tiger Band also once again was selected in a juried process to present a halftime video performance at the band directors' Southern Division Conference.

Director Mark Spede and assistant director Tim Hurlburt submitted the band’s halftime performance from the Auburn Game. This included “The Juggernaut” and “A Mis Abuelos” and was one of five performances shown at the February conference.

It was the fourth time the Tiger Band was selected by the association, twice for the national conference and twice for the regional conference. It's the only band in the country to have been selected every time it was eligible.

“Honors like these are a direct reflection of the hard work that our students put into making Clemson University’s Tiger Band one of the best in the country,” said Spede. “We are thankful for the opportunity to represent Clemson University on a regional and national stage and to share in the determined spirit that permeates our campus.”
