COLUMBIA — Businesses in Richland County have a new way to show they care about clean water.

The Richland Countywide Stormwater Consortium has introduced the Partners for Healthy Watersheds Business Recognition Program to recognize businesses that protect water quality in their communities.

Businesses play an important role in preventing stormwater pollution and protecting Richland County’s streams, lakes and rivers. Clean water means healthy communities and a healthy economy.

Partners for Healthy Watersheds is open to any business, organization, non-profit, school or congregation in Richland County.

Businesses and organizations interested in becoming a Partner for Healthy Watersheds can click here for more information or contact Mary Caflisch at Clemson Extension at calling 803-865-1216, ext. 122.

Participants receive a recognition certificate and window decal to display at the business, quarterly press releases naming all Watershed Partner Businesses, recognition on Richland Countywide Stormwater Consortium website and free pollution prevention training and materials for employees, among other benefits.

Participants in the Gills Creek watershed also will be recognized by the Gills Creek Watershed Association.

A watershed is an area where all rainfall drains to a lake, river or stream. Stormwater pollution happens when rain falling on hard surfaces picks up pollution on the ground — such as trash, pet waste or oil from cars — and carries it into storm drains.

Storm drains empty directly into streams, lakes and rivers without any treatment. Drinking water comes from lakes and rivers, so keeping these waterways clean is essential to healthy living.

The program is sponsored by Clemson Extension, Richland County, the city of Forest Acres, town of Arcadia Lakes and the Gills Creek Watershed Association.

Sumter Stormwater Solution is a regional collaboration involving Clemson University’s Carolina Clear program in partnership with communities and educators from universities, state agencies and nonprofits.
