Know what to do when tornadoes or severe storms are heading this way

Published: April 12, 2012

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are more common in the spring in this area than at any other time of the year.

Strong storms can be deadly, so take time to know what to do if severe weather is approaching. Remember that a tornado or severe thunderstorm watch means conditions exist that could produce dangerous weather. A warning means severe weather is approaching and you should seek shelter immediately.

If a tornado warning is issued:

  • Go to the lowest level possible
  • Get in an area away from windows and glass
  • Put as many walls between yourself and the outside as possible

Find your “safe locations” now, before a tornado strikes.

For more information, watch this video presented by university emergency preparedness coordinator Lynn Fisher and read about severe weather on the CU Safety site.

You also should sign up to receive CU Safe Alerts on your cell phone so you can receive warnings wherever you are.
