CLEMSON — Tony Cawthon, professor of student affairs in the department of leadership, counselor education and human and organizational development at Clemson University, was invited to participate in the South Africa Housing Training Institute hosted by Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
Sponsored by the Association of College and University Housing Officers International, the training institute provides professional development for individuals in South African colleges and universities who hope to embark on or further advance their careers in housing. Participants meet and interact with other colleagues, establish mentor relationships with professionals in the field, create professional development plans and gain skills and competencies needed to meet the current and future demands of the profession.
Cawthon was one of five American facilitators chosen for his expertise and experience in student affairs and university housing to attend the institute. Two South African facilitators also participated in the institute.
“This was a life-changing experience that opened my world view and challenged me to think differently,” Cawthon said. “Listening to participants’ stories about working in student affairs reminded me of what we have in common as we attempt to engage students and impact their experiences.”
Cawthon led extensive information sessions titled “Knowledge of Student Affairs Functions” and “Assessment of Student Interests and Needs,” and he served as a leader for a group of participants. Co-director of the South African Housing Training Institute Norbert Dunkel commended Cawthon and Clemson University for their contribution to the institute.
“Tony has brought Clemson University to the doorstep of a new global experience to train the housing profession of South Africa,” Dunkel said. “He did an amazing job.”
