CLEMSON — Clemson Provost Doris Helms announced Tuesday that Nadim Aziz, department chairman of civil engineering, has been named associate provost for faculty development and support.

“The Clemson faculty has tremendous intellectual talent, and in my new role as associate provost, I look forward to working with Provost Helms and with the faculty across all disciplines to foster positive change so that we can achieve our highest potential,” Aziz said. “Because of that, I am very optimistic about the future of Clemson University and the exceptional teaching and research experience we provide to our students to become leaders in their profession of choice.”

In his new role, Aziz will assist with developing faculty performance and compensation guidelines; reappointment, tenure and promotion policies; professional development/leadership programs; performance incentives; and high-quality office, laboratory and classroom space and equipment.

“Dr. Aziz is a distinguished scholar and outstanding administrator and has served the university admirably in many ways,” Helms said. “He has an appreciation for shared governance; an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of faculty; extensive experience with faculty personnel matters; leadership and planning abilities; analytical and decision-making expertise; a high energy level and a drive to get things done.”

Aziz first came to Clemson in 1984 as a visiting assistant professor for a semester. He stayed and moved up through the ranks to assistant professor, associate professor and professor of civil engineering. He has chaired the civil engineering department since 2003 and served as director of the resilient infrastructure focus area for the Clemson University Restoration Institute since 2007.

Aziz earned his bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Mississippi. He is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American and International water resources associations. He has numerous publications, sponsored research projects and professional achievements.

Under his leadership of the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering, the faculty evaluation process was streamlined, diversity of faculty and graduate students increased and a new faculty workload model was developed and implemented. As a result, the department has witnessed growth in its research scholarship, research expenditures and faculty awards and recognitions. During his tenure as chairman, the department received its highest national rankings, and last year the department received a $5 million dollar endowment.
