CLEMSON — Clemson University’s assistant fire marshal Donnie Brewer and emergency preparedness coordinator Lynn Fisher each have been named Public Safety Officer of the Year by the Insurance Women of the Piedmont.

After retiring as Clemson University fire marshal in 2007, Brewer has been a fire protection specialist and is the university’s assistant fire marshal. He has been a South Carolina firefighter for more than 33 years. In his current position, he works to ensure that state laws and codes are followed for the safety of building construction and maintenance.

Fisher is the university emergency preparedness coordinator. He also served in this role for Pickens County. During his time at the university, he has worked on safety plans and assessments for the area, including nuclear emergencies, severe weather and hazardous material. Fisher also helped coordinate the Joint Emergency Operations Center for Clemson.

Clemson Fire Chief William Daniel nominated the two, and they each received a plaque at an awards dinner for their contributions.

The award was created in 1999 to honor the men and women in fire, police and EMS departments in Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties who “go beyond the call of duty” to protect and serve. They are recognized annually for their outstanding service in their positions.

“The Insurance Women of the Piedmont appreciate the efforts of these two men who dedicate their talents and time to making our world safer,” said Linda Rice, director of risk management for Clemson and chairwoman of the public safety officers’ committee for Insurance Women of the Piedmont. “It is an honor to recognize them for their dedication and thank them for carrying out their duties on behalf of the citizens of Pickens County.”
