Clemson Extension pond school coming to Horry County

Published: August 15, 2012

CONWAY — Clemson University Extension is hosting a pond-management workshop covering the basic science behind lake care for owners and managers of private lakes and ponds.

The pond school provides up-to-date information that enables pond and lake owners and managers to make sound, cost-effective management decisions; and solutions to the most common pond and lake-management challenges, such as shoreline and outfall repair, aquatic weed control, fish stocking and harvesting, water chemistry and fertilization, and nuisance wildlife control.

The workshop is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Clemson University Horry County Extension office, 1949 Industrial Park Road, Conway. The cost is $50, which includes lunch.

The day-long program includes presentations on pond permitting, pond design and construction, basic lake science, aquatic weed identification and fish stocking and harvesting.

An afternoon field tour includes demonstrations of fish-collection techniques for assessing population balance. It also covers weed identification and site-specific control recommendations, and will demonstrate equipment necessary to assess critical water quality conditions.

Private and commercial applicators will receive pesticide recertification credits for attending this workshop. Applicators must sign in at the workshop and will need to know or have their pesticide license numbers with them at sign-in. The workshop qualifies for two pesticide recertification credits (Category 5 — Aquatic Herbicides).

Stormwater ponds dot the landscape of the Grand Strand. They play a critical role in runoff storage, flood control and in local water quality. As ponds age they can become costly to maintain.

Understanding the regulations and function of pond performance is critical for stormwater treatment and pond longevity.
