CLEMSON — Polish up those spelling skills in preparation for the fun-filled musical journey of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" presented in October by the Clemson Players and the university performing arts department.
This musical comedy follows a rag-tag group of prepubescent spellers annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
Director and Clemson faculty member Kerrie Seymour fell in love with the musical the first time she listened to it in a recording.
“I laughed out loud and was completely moved,” she said. “That was about three or four years ago and I’ve been trying to find the perfect time to direct it here at Clemson. This was that time. It is a great show for our student actors and for our university audience.”
Along with the case, four audience volunteers at each show will participate as on-stage guest spellers.
Kat Watson, a performing srts student and the stage manager, described rehearsals as “one of the most incredible processes I’ve ever been a part of.
“The characters themselves are so clearly defined and lovable that every audience member will find someone to relate to, if not all of them,” she said.
Watson’s grown “rather attached” to all of them as they’ve each developed during rehearsals.
The "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" will be performed at 8 p.m. from Oct. 1–5 and 8-10 and at 3 p.m. Oct. 7.
All shows will take place in the Bellamy Theatre in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $11 for adults and $6 for students. More information and tickets are available at www.clemson.edu/Brooks or by calling the box office at 864-656-7787 from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday–Friday.
