CLEMSON — Brazilian brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad have set the benchmark for all other guitarists by creating a new standard of guitar innovation, ingenuity and expression. They will bring their highly lauded musicianship to Clemson University's Brooks Center for the Performing Arts stage as part of the Utsey Chamber Music Series at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12.
The Assads' international career began with a major prize at the 1979 Young Artist Competition in Bratislava and they have earned many awards and honors since. They were recipients of a 2001 Latin Grammy for their Nonesuch Records release “Sérgio and Odair Assad Play Piazzolla” and another for Sérgio in 2007 for his composition “Tahhiyya Li Ossoulina.”
Their performance at the Brooks Center will include various classical and Latin-inspired pieces and takes the audience on a “Journey of the Brazilian Guitar through History” in the second half of the program.

For 26 years, Clemson University’s award-winning Utsey Chamber Music Series has presented 119 free chamber music concerts and continues with seven more in its 27th year. Recognized for outstanding programming and community service, the series has earned national accolades for showcasing the best soloists and ensembles in the genre. In 2007, the university received an Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts, South Carolina’s highest arts award, for outstanding contributions to the arts in the Palmetto State.
