CLEMSON — Clemson University assistant professor Joseph P. Mazer has been named in the top 1 percent of published communication scholars in the past five years by the journal Communication Education.
Mazer is associate chairman of the communication studies department in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities and is director of the college’s Social Media Listening Center.
Communication Education conducted a study to find the most prolific communication studies scholars based on their publication rates in 24 journals from 2007 to 2011. To be included, a scholar must have published at least nine articles.
Thirty scholars were included in the list out of the 3,500 scholars whose research productivity was analyzed. Mazer, the youngest on the list, was ranked number 21.
According to the study, the number of a scholar’s publications has been the primary method for evaluating research merit.
“I am honored to be included in this list of scholars from across the discipline of communication studies,” Mazer said. “This ranking is testament to the research conducted in communication studies and more generally in the humanities here at Clemson.
“Faculty in the department of communication studies are conducting cutting-edge research, particularly related to communication and social media, and over the course of the next five years we are excited to watch these efforts unfold,” he said.
Mazer is a member of the National Communication Association and the Central States Communication Association. He received his Ph.D. in communication studies from Ohio University.
Communication Education is a quarterly academic journal that publishes research related to the role of communication in teaching and learning contexts. It is published on behalf of the National Communication Association, the world’s largest professional organization of scholars, educators, students and practitioners dedicated to studying and promoting effective and ethical communication.
