ANIMAL TRACK TRICKSTERS
Learn about the habits and adaptations that animals use to survive winter, and look for clues of animal activity in the Garden. Each participant will make their own animal track cast, and the session concludes with a game of winter wildlife bingo. Registration is capped at 15. Due to curing time, tracks will be picked up after 24 hours.
Fee: $5 ($4 for members and volunteers)
Time: 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

GARDEN NATURALISTS: Winter Tree Identification
Learn how to use twigs, buds, scales and bark to identify deciduous trees in winter. Join Garden naturalist Sue Watts to learn helpful characteristics and become familiar with a dichotomous key for winter trees. A classroom introduction will be followed by hands-on fieldwork in the Garden’s woodland habitats.
Fee: $20 ($15 for members and volunteers)

EXPLORING ASIAN VEGETABLES: Cambodia
As part of a Clemson University sustainable agriculture outreach team, Meg Williamson provided expertise in plant disease diagnosis on a trip to Cambodia in October. Hear the highlights of her trip as she shares her experiences during the workshop and while visiting vegetable farms, fields and cultural sites near Phnom Penh.

DESIGNING WITH PLANTS
A pleasing landscape depends on combining trees, shrubs and perennials in ways that work over the seasons and years. Garden education director Lisa Wagner guides you to design your landscape with space and time in mind. The workshop also includes using design elements such as shape, size, foliage texture and color to maximize appeal throughout the year.

Join naturalist Sue Watts to start your exploration of native trees in the Garden, learn about trees in winter and how you can enjoy this special time of year in the Garden.

STARTING A COOL-SEASON VEGETABLE GARDEN
Simple frost protection provides a tempering influence, allowing cool-season veggies to thrive in the lengthening days of our usually mild winters. Vegetables well suited to cold weather include salad greens, spinach and kale, as well as turnips, beets and other crops. Select seeds to sow a variety of cool-season vegetables, and learn how to extend your gardening seasons.

HOMESCHOOL DAYS: The Hunt Cabin
This program exclusively for homeschool groups and families demonstrates life in Upstate South Carolina during the 19th century. Hands-on experiences will make this a truly memorable morning. Register one week in advance for pre-visit materials; space is limited.
Fee: $10 per student ($9 for members and volunteers)
Time: 9 a.m. to noon

MAKING WINTER POP (WITH PLANTS)
Winter is the perfect time to notice plant architecture, bark color and evergreen foliage textures, punctuated by shrubs and trees that flower in winter. Join Garden education director Lisa Wagner to learn more about plants that illuminate cold weather.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The South Carolina Botanical Garden is located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of Highway 76 and Perimeter Road. The Garden encompasses 295 acres of display gardens, nature trails, woodlands and streams, and is open year-round from dawn to dusk, free of charge. Discovery Center and Garden Gift Shop hours: 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1–5 p.m. Sunday.

The Garden is partially supported by the state of South Carolina via Clemson University, but relies on private funding, memberships and proceeds from educational events to support operations.
