CLEMSON — Clemson professor Tony Cawthon has been named a Faculty Fellow of NASPA, the national association for student affairs administrators.

Cawthon is a professor of student affairs and higher education in Clemson’s Eugene T. Moore School of Education. Previously, Cawthon was department chairman of leadership, counselor education, human and organizational development in the school.

Cawthon received bachelor’s degrees in sociology and psychology from University of Tennessee in 1981. He earned a master’s in sociology from Tennessee in 1983 and a doctorate in philosophy with a focus on student development, both from the University of Mississippi.

Cawthon joined Clemson in 1991 as director of residential life in university housing. In 1997, he became a professor in the department of leadership and counselor education. Now he works primarily with graduate students in the masters student affairs program and higher education doctoral program.

“I am honored and humbled to be asked to participate as a NASPA Fellow. Serving as a fellow allows me to give back to a profession and to serve students that have given professionally and personally so much to me,” said Cawthon.

The NASPA Faculty Fellows program has 12 members and was started in 2002 for consultation and contributions in the direction of research and a scholarship in the field, as well as other issues. NASPA is a national organization dedicated to the advancement, health and sustainability of the student affairs profession. It was founded in 1919 and has members in all 50 states, 29 countries and eight U.S. territories.
