CLEMSON — Join the Clemson University Symphonic Band at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts as it presents an evening concert built around the theme of “collective spirit.”
“The music of this concert explores a topic that has great resonance for many composers: the connection that music has to our collective human spirit,” director Mark Spede said.
Appropriately, the night opens with Robert Jager’s piece “Esprit de Corps” based on the Marine Hymn that is meant to depict the camaraderie one feels as a member of any elite organization.
Next, the band will share reverence and the spirit of new life with Morton Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” then reflect the energy of childhood and youth with “A Boy’s Dream” by Jay Bocook of Furman University.
Steve Danyew’s “This World Alive” will see its world premiere performance at the conclusion of the first half of the concert. The Clemson bands were part of a consortium that helped create the work. An accompanying film tribute to photographer Ansel Adams will be played in tandem with the music.
After intermission, “Fantasia in G” by Timothy Mahr will fill the theater with the spirit of brotherhood and David Maslanka’s “Give Us This Day: A Short Symphony” will conclude the evening.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available for purchase online at www.clemson.edu/Brooks and through the box office at 864-656-7787 from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
