Doctor to present oral memoir: 'From Pumpkintown to Paris' at Clemson

CLEMSON — Clemson native and Clemson University alumnus Dr. James Sutherland will present an oral memoir, "Vignettes in the Life of a Clemson Boy: Pumpkintown to Paris and Mentors In-Between," at 7 p.m. April 3 in the Self Auditorium at the Strom Thurmond Institute.

The free presentation is the Calhoun Lecture Series William H. Hunter, M.D., Endowed Lecture, which focuses on the healing arts and sciences and the men and women who devote their lives to medicine.

Clemson born and bred, Dr. Sutherland received his bachelor's degree from Clemson University in 1967 and was senior class president. He was awarded the Norris Medal, named an all-ACC basketball player and ACC Student-Athlete of the Year for all sports. His athletic skill earned him a place in the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame and a draft pick by the Seattle Supersonics.  

Following Clemson, Dr. Sutherland graduated from Emory University School of Medicine and was a resident in pediatrics and served in the U.S. Army in West Germany. He is a retired colonel with the Army Reserve.  

He was awarded a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine from 1978 to 1980, then and went on to become a pediatric cardiologist at Letterman Army Medical Center at the Presidio in San Francisco. He has worked for the U.S Army in Saudi Arabia in 1985 and was a pediatric cardiologist at Driscoll Children's Hospital, Corpus Christi, Texas, from 1986 to 1989.

Dr. Sutherland is currently an attending pediatric cardiologist at the Emory University Department of Pediatrics/Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. He is to married Mary C. King of Batesburg-Leesville and has one daughter, Catherine, who graduated from Boston University in 2011.

Dr. Sutherland received the Clemson Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.
