CLEMSON — The Clemson University Concert Band and Clemson University Symphonic Band join forces to present an evening of music at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts.

The Concert Band, directed by Timothy Hurlburt, opens the evening with “For the Beauty of the Earth” by John Rutter and follows with a new work by John Mackey titled “Sheltering Sky” that was inspired by folk songs and the work of Percy Grainger.

Guest conductor Patrick Mainieri will join the band to perform “El Capitan” by John Philip Sousa and the section ends with “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Barnes Chance.

The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mark Spede, opens with “Fanfare on a Theme of Paganini,” composed by Spede and commissioned by the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities for the 40th anniversary of the Architecture Center in Genoa, Italy. A favored musical son of Genoa, Paganini has inspired many other composers.

The evening concludes with “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky accompanied by art illustrating the music.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available for purchase online at www.clemson.edu/Brooks and through the box office at 864-656-7787 from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
