Earth Day Coloring Contest open to Darlington kids

FLORENCE — The Florence/Darlington Stormwater Consortium, in conjunction with the Darlington Conservation District, is sponsoring an Earth Day Coloring Contest for children ages 4-12.

There are contests for age groups 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. All entrants must be residents of Darlington County. Three winners from each group will be chosen by members of the stormwater consortium.

The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. April 17. Send entries to Terasa Young, Clemson University Extension-Florence County, 2685 S. Irby St., Suite K, Florence, SC 29505.

To enter, download a coloring sheet. The contest is open only to residents of Darlington County.

Entries can be picked up April 29-May 3 the Florence County Extension office on Irby Street.

The winners from each age group will be notified April 19. Winning entries will be displayed at the the Darlington County Library April 19–26. 

Children must color the page and have a parent initial that the child has completed one of the following “earth-friendly” activities:

  • Walk with a parent from your yard and find the storm drain that your water drains into. Pick up trash along the way.
  • Recycle your household plastic for one week. Take it to a county convenience center if you don’t have curbside recycling.
  • Pack a waste-free lunch for one week by using reusable containers.
  • Carry a bag while walking your dog and use it to pick after your pet.
  • Use at least two reusable grocery bags when you go to the store with your parents this week.

Earth Day 2013 is April 22.

The Florence/Darlington Stormwater Consortium is a regional collaboration involving the Carolina Clear program in partnership with communities and educators from universities, state agencies and nonprofits.

Carolina Clear is a stormwater education and awareness program of the Clemson University Restoration Institute and the Center for Watershed Excellence. The program’s goal is to minimize polluted stormwater runoff by educating the general public, youth, builders, developers, homeowners and government officials about how they can keep water in the state’s streams, rivers and basins as clean as possible.
