Enjoy a day of agriculture at annual Fall Field Day

BLACKVILLE – From beef cattle and row crops to peanuts and pumpkins, the Clemson University Edisto Research and Education Center will open its fields Thursday, Sept. 3, for the annual agricultural showcase.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, features the choice of three morning tours between 9:30 a.m. and noon: 

  • The peanut tour includes presentations on herbicide efficiency, disease management and a look at new varieties. CCA and pesticide recertification credits will be offered.
  • The beef cattle and forages tour includes hay production and new fertilizer sources, pasture weed control and perennial peanuts.
  • The row crops and new technologies tour includes presentations on management of insects in cotton, corn and soybeans, sensor-based management of nitrogen in cotton production and a soybean rust update. CCA and pesticide recertification credits will be offered.

During lunch from noon to 1 p.m., the indoor program includes a fall weather forecast from S.C. Department of Natural Resources meteorologist Mark Malsick and addresses from S.C. Department of Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers and David Winkles, president of the South Carolina Farm Bureau.

Following lunch, two additional tours between 1:15 and 3:30 p.m. will take in the Edisto Forage Bull Test Center (this tour concludes at 2:15 p.m.) and vegetable crops, which features presentations on pumpkin and fall watermelon production.

Clemson’s Edisto center is on U.S. 78 three miles west of Blackville in Barnwell County.
