Clemson alumni to hold national community service weekend

Published: March 16, 2010

CLEMSON — Clemson University graduates around the country will reach out to help others during the Clemson Alumni Association’s second Alumni National Service Weekend March 19-21.

The Clemson Alumni Association is encouraging all alumni to participate in some sort of service project over the weekend, either with local Clemson Clubs or individually.

“The Alumni National Service Weekend is a wonderful opportunity for the Clemson family to show our true spirit by coming together to give back to their communities all over the country,” said Clemson Alumni Association President Leslie Callison of Lexington. “So often, Clemson alumni and friends ask how they can get involved in local Clemson activities. This effort provides a meaningful way to use their talents and determination to serve, while joining with other Tigers in a fun day of service.”

In South Carolina, several clubs have organized service projects.

The Anderson Area Clemson Club will sell concessions at Clemson’s March 17 baseball game against Georgia Southern. Proceeds raised from the sales will go to the Anderson Humane Society.

The Columbia Clemson Club will volunteer at Camp Discovery from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 20.

The newly formed Greater Pee Dee Clemson Club in Florence has several projects planned, including a food and clothing drive for The Manna House, The House of Hope and Paws for the Cause, a group of Clemson students collecting T-shirts to send to Haiti.

Clemson Clubs in other areas of the country also plan to participate. The Charlotte Clemson Club will help out at the Harris YMCA Teen Center’s after school night dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 19. Volunteers will help serve food and conduct activities with youth.

In Baton Rouge, La., alumni will pitch in at the Community of Life Thrift Store from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, March 20.

The Pittsburgh Clemson Club, which was chartered earlier this year, will volunteer at the Bethlehem Haven Shelter located at 1410 Fifth Ave. in uptown Pittsburgh from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21. Members will help take inventory and collect donations for the shelter.

In Nashville, Tenn., alumni will help at the Monroe-Harding Children’s Home in the Green Hills area. Volunteers will do yard work and repair work around the building.

The Clemson Alumni Association represents more than 114,500 Clemson alumni. There are 59 regional Clemson Clubs across the country.
