Scholar grad shines in law school (posted
Spring 2008)
Brian Eyink, a 2006 economics graduate and current second year law student
at Duke, recently won two significant recognitions. First, he was elected
executive editor of the Duke Law Journal in early February. A week later,
he won the Duke Dean's Cup Moot Court competition, arguing in front of
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, Judge Jose Cabranes of the 2nd U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals, and Judge William Pauley of the U.S. District
Court for the Southern District of New York. Click

Reighard selected as national finalist for Truman Scholarship
(posted Spring 2007)
Third-year Scholar Chelsea Reighard will soon compete for the Truman Scholarship
as a national finalist. The Truman offers graduate school funding for
students who plan careers in public service. A double major in genetics
and language & international health, Reighard is currently studying
abroad at the University of Granada in Spain. |

Smith named national finalist for Rhodes Scholarship (posted
Fall 2006)
Senior Scholar Christen Smith was recently named a national finalist for
the Rhodes Scholarship, the most prestigious post-undergraduate scholarship
for American undergraduates. The Rhodes provides funding for study at
Oxford University. A native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Smith is a double major
in public health sciences and economics, and has interned in Kenya with
a medical mission group; in Oaxaca, Mexico, with publich health education
program; and in Washington, D.C., in the Africa burea of the US Agency
for International Development. |

Gosnell wins campus, national recognition (posted
Spring 2006)
In March, third-year Scholar Stephen Gosnell won a run-off election
to serve as the 2006-2007 Clemson Student Body President (he previously
served as Vice President and Student Senator). A week later, Gosnell was
named a 2006 Goldwater Scholar, the top award for undergraduates pursuing
majors in engineering and the sciences. |

Smith named Truman finalist (posted
Spring 2006)
Third-year Scholar Christen Smith has been named a national finalists
for the Truman Scholarship. The Truman is awarded to college juniors who
have demonstrated a commitment to community service and plan a career
in the public service arena. Christen will interview in Washington, D.C.,
on March 17 for the award.
A public health sciences major, Christen has worked in international public
health in Kenya and Mexico. Closer to campus, Christen co-founded the
Clemson chapter of the Foundation for the International Medical Relief
of Children, and is active in several mentoring and English-language tutoring
efforts. |

| Graduating seniors honor two professors with Awards of Distinction
(posted Spring 2004) |
|
On the eve of their graduation, the inaugural class of National Scholars
honored two professors for their commitment to this group's intellectual,
professional and personal development with the first-ever National Scholars
Program "Awards of Distinction."
English professor Alma Bennett and psychology professor Patricia Connor-Greene
received the awards at an April 21 celebration dinner in the President's
Box at Memorial Stadium.
Bennett was praised for her work as the senior fellow for many of the
Scholars participating in the Dixon Fellows Program. Matt Kerr said
"[her] significant knowledge and experience helped us interrelate
the things wed seen both with each other and, more importantly,
with our own disciplines, Kerr said.
Connor-Greene was recognized for her devotion to helping students learn.
Elizabeth Ward cited Connor-Greene as the most dynamic, energetic
professor I have had. She loves teaching and inspiring her students.
Every student in her class enjoyed coming to class every day and doing
the work.

| Sams, Young named 2004 Goldwater Scholars

|
Will Sams and Jeffrey Young (both NS 2001) have been awarded the 2004
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship,
the top award for students in science, engineering and mathematics.
Only 310 scholarships were awarded in 2004, and 1113 college sophmores
and juniors were nominated by their schools.
Two other Clemson students were also named 2004 Scholars, giving Clemson
more Goldwaters in 2004 than Georgia, Georgia Tech, UNC-Chapel Hill,
NC State, Virginia Tech, Cal Tech and UC-Berkeley. Clemson matched the
tally of four (the max awarded to any school) with Yale, Princeton,
Harvard, Virginia, Stanford, and MIT.
Since 2002, nine Clemson students have been named Goldwater Scholars,
and five of them have been National Scholars.

| Kerr, Ziska win 2003 Goldwater Scholarships

Matthew Kerr (NS 2000) and Joseph Ziska (NS
2001) have been awarded the 2003 Barry
M. Goldwater Scholarship, the top award for students in science, engineering
and mathematics. Only 300 scholarships were awarded in 2003, and 1093
college sophmores and juniors were nominated by their schools.
Christopher Welch (NS 2000, Campobello, SC) won the 2003 Goldwater Scholarship.

Welch Wins Goldwater Scholarship

| Christopher Welch (NS 2000) recently
was awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, one of only 309 awarded this
year. More than 1,100 mathematics, science, and engineering students from
all 50 states and Puerto Rico applied for the prestigious award. Recent
Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 44 Rhodes Scholarships (6 of the
thirty-two awarded in the United States in 2002), 39 Marshall Awards,
and numerous other distinguished fellowships. |
