Clemson adds hydrologist to Baruch faculty

GEORGETOWN — Clemson University has added a hydrologist to the faculty at the Belle W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science.

Anand Jayakaran, a native of India, began his duties Aug. 1, according to Will Conner, assistant director for the Baruch facility.

"Anand is a storm water engineer," said Conner, "and he adds a lot of expertise to our research capabilities

"I will be researching watersheds and how they are affected by the rapid development along the coast," said Jayakaran. "I will be looking at how urban development affects the quantity of runoff from storm events and studying ways to mitigate that runoff." He will use less-developed watersheds as a baseline comparison to show how stormwater affects the land in a more natural setting.

He will work closely with developers, state and county agencies and show homeowners and watershed managers how to reduce runoff.

Jayakaran earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Bangalore University in 1997. He also holds two graduate degrees from Ohio State University: a master's in civil engineering earned in 2002 and a Ph.D. in agriculture and biological engineering in 2006. Prior to coming to Clemson he worked for a year in a post-doctoral position at Ohio State in the food, agriculture and biological engineering department.

He and his wife, Katie, have a son, Tanay, born in June.
