Thomas Green Clemson Bicentennial Celebration 10K run
CLEMSON — Clemson University’s celebration of the 200th birthday of founder Thomas Green Clemson continues with a 10K road race Saturday, March 10, from his Fort Hill home on campus to the square in Pendleton.
A one-mile walk starts at 8:30 a.m., and the run begins at 9 a.m. Registration is $20 for Clemson students, employees and alumni and $25 for the general public. Participants who register by Wednesday, March 7, will receive a $5 discount. Registration forms are available online at stuaff.clemson.edu/campusrec or by calling at 656-6559.
The Thomas Green Clemson Road Race is sponsored by the university’s campus recreation department. For the past two years, it has been “The Sons and Daughters of Dear Old Clemson” 5K road race.
“We made the race a bit different this year to celebrate the bicentennial and Clemson University’s connections with the town of Pendleton. The race is a 10K this year, which makes it more challenging for our runners,” said Susan Pope, fitness and marketing director for campus recreation. “The party following the run just adds the icing to the birthday cake, so to speak. It’s a way for us to involve the community in the celebration and to pass our heritage on to those who might not be as familiar with it.”
Following the run, a birthday celebration for Thomas Green Clemson will take place on the square in Pendleton, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The party will feature face-painting, musical performances from Clemson faculty ensemble Any Old Time, balloons and, of course, birthday cake.
The Farmers Society of Pendleton will make a special presentation to Clemson University, stating their commitment to Clemson and recognizing the first discussions of establishing Clemson College held in Farmers Hall in Pendleton. Thomas Green Clemson was elected president of the Farmers Society in 1868. Farmers Society members will be in period clothing for the celebration, and an exhibit on the society will be in Farmers Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
