Tigers and Gamecocks to roll up their sleeves for 23rd annual blood drive

CLEMSON – Clemson University and the University of South Carolina will use their rivalry to benefit the entire state in the 23rd annual Clemson-USC Blood Bowl Nov. 12-16. It is organized at Clemson by Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity.

AnMed Health Blood Center, The Blood Connection and Piedmont Blood Center will be on campus collecting donations from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. those days in the Hendrix Student Center, Brown University Union and Holtzendorff Hall. Bloodmobiles will be located at Brackett Hall, Riggs Hall, the R.M. Cooper Library and the P&A building.

The National Marrow Donor Program also will participate by collecting names and information for the National Bone Marrow Registry at the Hendrix Student Center.

Clemson leads the competition with 13 wins over USC, including a win last year that snapped a five-year winning streak by USC. The drive last year was the largest blood drive in the history of South Carolina, said blood drive chairman Matthew Cousins, a graduate student from Newberry.

Over the 22 years of the competition, 70,056 units of blood have been collected by both schools. Since each unit of blood can potentially save the lives of three people, more than 210,000 lives may have been saved as a result of the annual drive.

All donors will receive a free long-sleeved orange T-shirt, a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A sandwich and other promotional items from Belk and the Pendleton Café and Coffee Co.
