Clemson celebrates American Indian Heritage Month

CLEMSON – Clemson University will celebrate American Indian Heritage Month on Friday, Nov. 16.

Rose Red Elk, a Native American storyteller, singer and songwriter, will perform at 7 p.m. in the Hendrix Student Center meeting rooms A and B.

Rose Red Elk, also called “Red Feather Woman,” was born on the Fort Peck Reservation in Poplar, Mont., and is a member of the Sioux/Assiniboine tribes. She has won the Native American Music Award in the spoken word category for a performance called “The Keepers of the Earth.” She mixes traditional Native American stories with music from today.

“The Office of Multicultural Programs and Services aims to celebrate the various cultures represented on campus in an effort to foster intercultural and cross-cultural awareness, understanding and celebration of campus diversity within the Clemson community,” said Christie Medina, associate director of multicultural programs and services for Clemson’s Gantt Intercultural Center.

“We have activities planned for American Indian Heritage Month to celebrate and honor the Native American/American Indian culture," she said. "It is often a cultural heritage month that is not often celebrated on college campuses and we would like to honor the Clemson family who identifies with this culture.”

The Office of Multicultural Programs and Services along with CLEMSONLiVE and WSBF-FM Clemson are sponsoring this event. It is open to students, faculty, staff and the community.

The celebration continues Tuesday, Nov. 27, with a game of Native American J-I-N-G-O at 6 p.m. in the Hendrix Student Center meeting room A. Native American J-I-N-G-O is a game by Gary Grimm & Associates. The game is played just like B-I-N-G-O, but pictures replace numbers on the player's card. This game allows players to learn various Native American/American Indian facts while playing a game.
