Clemson professor recognized by alma mater
CLEMSON – Dennis Smith, a Clemson University organic chemistry professor, was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from the Missouri State University Alumni Association.
Smith received his bachelor's in chemistry from Missouri State University in 1988 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Florida. Smith was a Rhone Poulenc Graduate Research Fellow in Lyon, France; a Dow Chemical Postdoctoral Fellow in Rheinmunster, Germany; and a Dow Chemical Central Research Laboratory project leader. He also was a recipient of the 1997 Dow Chemical Central Research Inventor of the Year Award.
Smith is a founding member and associate director of Clemson’s Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET). In 2006 he was elected vice chairman of the polymer division. He is the current American editor of the journal Polymer Bulletin. He also is on the editorial board for High Performance Polymers, Polymers for Advanced Technology.
Only 25 people have received this award since its inception in 1985. The Outstanding Young Alumni Award recognizes graduates of Missouri State University for achievement in their personal and professional lives.
