Leading researcher on cheating to visit Clemson
CLEMSON – Donald McCabe, founder and first president of the Center for Academic Integrity, will speak at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the BellSouth Auditorium at Clemson University's Madren Center.
McCabe, a professor of management and global business at Rutgers University, is considered the leading researcher and authority on cheating in high school and college. He will speak on the responsibility of faculty and administrators in ensuring a culture of academic integrity.
“We all have a responsibility for creating and maintaining a culture of academic integrity at Clemson,” said Frankie Felder, senior associate dean of the graduate school at Clemson. “We are honored to have Dr. McCabe join us in initiating a campus-wide discussion on how best to accomplish this.”
McCabe’s visit is part of a two-day professional development series at Clemson called “Ensuring a Culture of Academic Integrity” and is sponsored by the graduate school, the Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson and the university’s division of undergraduate studies.
McCabe has conducted extensive research on academic cheating, surveying more than 150,000 students at more than 150 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. He also has surveyed 40,000 high school students over the last six years. His work has appeared in leading journals such as “Science and Engineering Ethics,” “Journal of College and University Law” and “Journal of Higher Education.” His work has been featured on “60 Minutes,” “NBC Nightly News” and the “Wall Street Journal.”
There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Strom Thurmond Institute to celebrate the addition of the Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson. The center is a consortium of 350 colleges and universities promoting academic integrity among college and university students. A discussion on student responsibility in academic integrity will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the Strom Thurmond Institute auditorium.
